Kids Democracy - Part I

KIDS DEMOCRACY - PART I - Investigation and pilot testing

ABOUT THE PROJECT

In collaboration with the housing department AKB, Ved Milestedet in Rødovre, we investigated in 2015-2016 how to work with children's democracy in social housing areas. The purpose was to investigate what, and how, children can have an influence and to collect the first practical experiences on the involvement of children in social housing areas via the implementation of a pilot project.

Kids Democracy's fundamental idea is to give children influence over their own lives, where they live, and at the same time achieve more well-functioning housing areas. On the basis of experience gained from the study and the pilot test, the project must be scaled up in part II. This means that different child involvement methods must be further developed and tested across the country in four different housing areas in the project: Involvement of children in social housing areas via Kids Democracy: Development, testing and anchoring – a practical tool for Kids Democracy.

Cube is a social educational offer for children and young people aged 12-17, and is located in the social housing area of Vapnagaard. Cube was established in 2015 by Helsingør municipality to support children and young people in the residential area with major challenges in relation to getting their lives and everyday life on track. Our task was to identify, collect and pass on the experiences of challenges and opportunities that made themselves felt for the central actors in and around Cube. The aim was to achieve a common knowledge base which could contribute to the people behind Cube's ability to discuss and assess the future efforts at Cube.
